Dear JD2B
Financially Distressed

Do international students get any financial aid from their law schools? Law school is way too expensive.

Dear Financially Distressed,

All schools offer financial aid.  In fact, it is quite common for law students to receive grants, scholarships, or tuition waivers from their schools.  The financial aid package you receive usually depends on your GPA and LSAT score.  If you scored higher than most students in the school you are enrolling at, your scholarship will probably be larger.  If you didn’t score high enough, the school may offer you loans with competitive interest rates.  Our website has some information on student financing that you may want to look over.

If cash is really tight, I would opt to attend a public university.  There are many competitive law schools that are government subsidized, such as UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School of Law.  Choosing to attend a public university might offset the higher tuition costs you’ll pay as an international student.
