Profs. and jobs

In selecting a law school you want a school that has exceptional faculty because you need to be well prepared for the Bar Exam and for working as a lawyer after graduation. The SU law faculty from 1995 - 1998 when I was there were incredible. I was very well trained in thinking as a lawyer. However, on helping to find a great job after graduation SU Law failed. The Career Services Center (still run by the same person today) was awful. They help the students 0. They do not even know how to help a student put together a resume and they do not do a good job getting firms and corporations to come to campus to interview. It is one of their jobs to sell SU Law so that people want to hire grads. They need to improve big time.

I totally agree with those sentiments. It took me until January the year after I graduated to find a job. Career services did not offer much assistance at all unless you were top 10% of the class. It really is a shame because the school has a lot of name recognition. My best example as to how incompetent career services is that I told them that I was looking for a clerkship in the Baltimore area. Career services neglected to tell me that there was a judge there who graduated from Syracuse. I did not find that out until after I found out that she had already hired a clerk. The one thing that I will disagree with is that the faculty is no longer incredible. The professors that have been there for a long time are AMAZING. However, the recent hires are, to put it nicely, incompetent. One of the professors practiced law for exactly one year, and his practice focused on Indian Law; yet Syracuse had him teaching wills and estates. He did not know the material, and it was reflected in his lectures. Students went to the board to correct him.
