Edwards' Campaign Blogger Quits Amid Catholic Controversy

When
our Constitution says that we have certain freedoms, it is a testament
that the government will protect certain inalienable rights. In reality, though, our freedom is contingent on the extent of the responsibility that we are willing to be accountable for. Although we are legally protected, that does not change our “fear” of responsibility and repercussion. That fear of adversity is what keeps many of us in line. Not Amanda Marcotte, though. As a campaign blogger for presidential candidate and former Sen. John Edwards, her personal blog, Pandagon, stirred up trouble after controversial posts about Christianity. After
being given fair warning by Edwards and being slammed by Bill Donohue,
President of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights,
Marcotte announced her resignation yesterday.
Donohue
wrote, “John Edwards is a decent man who has had his campaign tarnished
by two anti-Catholic vulgar trash-talking bigots. He has no choice but to fire them immediately.”
Speaking from a strict philosophical outlook, I can say that Donohue was wrong: Edwards did have a choice. But, it’s all politics in Washington. There is a reputation to uphold and people to please.
For
fear of alienating Catholic voters, Edwards distanced himself from his
bloggers while retaining them on staff, saying “the tone and sentiment
of some of Amanda Marcotte’s and Melissa McEwan’s posts personally
offended me. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but
that kind of intolerant language will not be permitted from anyone on
my campaign, whether it’s intended as satire, humor, or anything else.”
Marcotte also had a choice. She chose to speak, even when adversity closed in around her. Now, she has chosen to resign, so that her opinions won’t alienate voters and threaten Edward’s campaign.
I should note that Donohue’s a hypocrite for vilifying Marcotte as “vulgar trash-talking bigots.” He referred to gays as “queers” and has labeled their lifestyle as the “gay death style.” In
2004, he said, “Hollywood is controlled by secular Jews who hate
Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular…Hollywood likes
anal sex. They like to see the public square without nativity scenes. I like families. I like children. They like abortions. I believe in traditional values and restraint. They believe in libertinism. We have nothing in common. But you know what? The culture war has been ongoing for a long time. Their side has lost.”
Donohue was right, though. “The culture war has been ongoing for a long time.” Let’s
just accept this, be thankful that we all have an opinion, and keep in
mind that inside each of us, there’s a trash-talker.
