University at Buffalo Law School to Launch Veterans’ Economic Security Clinic

Beginning next semester, the University at Buffalo Law School will launch a clinical program called the Veterans’ Economic Security Clinic, according to a press release from the school.
Free civil legal services will be provided to veterans in Western New York who are faced with eviction and consumer debt problems.
The clinic will be operated by law faculty and students to help fight homelessness and increase financial security for veterans.
“This clinic will help serve critical needs in the veterans’ community while giving students the opportunity to get great hands-on experience,” says Kim Diana Connolly, professor of law, director of clinical legal education and vice dean for legal skills. “The veterans clinic will dovetail nicely with our strong existing clinical programs serving vulnerable populations in Western New York.”
Students working in the veterans’ clinic will obtain experience representing clients, serving veterans in multiple ways and obtain an understanding of the VA hospital system.
“I am very excited about the launch of the clinic. It’s going to be great for the community and for students,” says Roman Fontana, an attorney with the Veterans One-stop Center of Western New York. “Landlord-tenant issues and consumer debt problems are some of the most common legal concerns facing veterans here in Buffalo and we are looking forward to working with clinical students and faculty to help make an immediate impact in these areas.”
The clinic will be led by Cody Jacobs, who is an instructor and clinical teaching fellow at the University at Buffalo Law School.
“I am thrilled to be able to start a veterans’ clinic here in Buffalo,” Jacobs said. “I am proud of the UB Law School’s willingness to dedicate resources to helping veterans get the help they need and deserve. It has also been a pleasure to work with such amazing partners in the community, who have been so supportive in our efforts to get this clinic off the ground.”
Law students in their second and third years at the law school will have access to the clinic when the spring semester begins. Students who work for the clinic will be working under New York’s student practice rule, which means they will be able to lead in client representation.
