Having a Sense of the Big Picture

Sheila Birnbaum has recently taken the next expansion of her career, leaving Skadden Arps to work at Quinn Emanuel, saying, “I had a wonderful run at Skadden and have many great friends there. However, the opportunity to join Quinn Emanuel was an offer I could not refuse. Its pure litigation model is a more natural fit with my practice. It represents a new and exciting challenge for me.” She was ready to grow a little, and why not, Skadden was likely to retire her, as she was 72-years-old.
Clearly, Birnbaum, who has had a superstar career as a litigator, contributing to Supreme Court legislation, among other things, and who has been ranked a top litigator by many different award systems, had a sense of the big picture. Having that sense starts now, in law school; it requires having vision, answering the question, “Where can I go with this? Where do I want to go?”
Perhaps something as personal as a goal sheet, diary entry, or personal reflection gives you a sense of that big picture, what its all about, but having it in advance, getting a clear sense of what it is all about, will help you prepare for it in these crucial years in school and as you set up your career. What, ultimately, do you hope to get out of a career?
Work and love were identified by Freud as the great values of life. If we add a third, a mixture of the two, passion, then between the three, work is the part that will require the most hours of concentration during the work week and will take up most of your time. Passion is the mixture of love and work that can be poured into a hobby, into religion, or again into work or love themselves. Setting yourself up for a rewarding life means having direction, or vision, a sense, in other words, of ambition on the job. And the key to ambition is clearly defined goals. Taking time to punctuate your career with reflections on what you’ve learned and where you are heading will give you a sense of an all-view, of the big picture, a map, a destiny, a life. So take the time to reflect, and also to dream.
