Should you Choose an Emphasis in Law School?
By Daniel June

Most law schools don’t offer the option to “major” in any specific aspect of law, nor to choose a special concentration. In most causes, that is something you would informally do by choosing classes that pertain to your ultimate career goal. But should you? Is it better to get a well-rounded education, or should you select the courses that address your greatest interest?

What, after all, is your greatest interest? If you have a specific career track in mind, be sure to question it to make sure the reasons are not only noble, but pragmatic. Trying to impress ma and pa, or make heaps of money, often doesn’t work out as planned. If you are so set on one career path, you might miss the hints and whispers to better dreams that taking general classes will give you.

One way to be sure is to talk with people in your field. Your career planning office can help hook up up with a coffee meeting, or give you an email address to make a contact. Unless your parent or older brother or sister was in this career track, you might be looking at it with glamorous eyes, and not the eyes of an insider. Talking with somebody in the field will clear that up.

Try to get some work, either volunteer work or some clinical experience, in the field that so fascinates you. Nothing disillusions our dreams like living them.
If you do find a career track that speaks to you, you still don’t have to study along those lines. A well-rounded education will serve any career track. You will get the specific training you need while on the job. Having focused on only one thing might limit rather than empower you.

If however your passion is pure and your heart is set, setting up some sort of informal emphasis might not only prepare you for the rest of your life, but put you under professors and classes that speak to your greatest interests. That is the best situation to learn under.
