Steptoe Adds Seven-Lawyer Group in San Francisco and Chicago

Steptoe & Johnson LLP announced the addition of a seven-lawyer team to their San Francisco and Chicago offices. The commercial litigation group is led by Stephanie Sheridan, who will chair their Retail Industry practice and be the managing partner of the San Francisco office.

The attorneys joining with her include Anthony Anscombe, who be a partner in the San Francisco and Chicago office, Darlene Alt, who will be a partner in the Chicago office, and Carol Brophy, who is a senior counsel in San Francisco. There will also be three associates with the team, Mary Beth Buckley in Chicago and Meegan Brooks and David Mesa in San Francisco.

Steptoe Chair Phil West said, “We are excited to kick off the new year with the arrival of this dynamic group of trial lawyers. They have built a strong consumer protection and tort litigation practice that will greatly complement the litigation practices in our Commercial Litigation Group and expand the suite of services offered to our clients. We also appreciate the good work of Bill Abrams in serving as the managing partner for our Northern California office since he started the Palo Alto office with a group of IP lawyers in January 2014, and later moved the office to San Francisco with a group of litigators led by Laurie Edelstein.”

Sheridan was named a Law360 MVP for Retail law for the second year. She has spent the last 20 years representing retail industry clients through cases of deceptive pricing schemes for full price and outlet retailers. Some of the clients she has represented include Macy’s, DSW, JCrew, and Stein Mart. She also worked with clients on defense against Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act claims, California’s “Made in the USA” statute, and California’s Song-Beverly Credit Card Act class actions.

Anscombe also has a great deal of trial experience, especially in class action matters involving consumer fraud, warranty, deceptive trade practices, statutory and mass tort claims. He started his career in San Francisco where he practices for eleven years before moving to Chicago. He still maintains dual residence between the two offices.

Abrams said, “We are very excited to welcome Stephanie, Anthony, and Carol to the San Francisco office. Their joining the firm caps off a great year for us in San Francisco. We very much look forward to working with Stephanie as she takes over as San Francisco managing partner and leads the office to further growth and success.”
