Greenberg Traurig Considering Merger with British Law Firm

Summary: Greenberg Traurig has entered into merger discussions with British law firm Berwin Leighton Paisner, which would add 850 lawyers to their team.

Greenberg Traurig Considering Merger with British Law Firm

Greenberg Traurig, a leading law firm based in Miami, is looking to continue its growth through a merger with British firm Berwin Leighton Paisner. The Am Law 100 firm has entered into preliminary discussions with the large British firm.

Chairman Richard Rosenbaum at Greenberg Traurig said, “When opportunities to execute our strategies are presented, we will act on these, because we owe it to our clients and our lawyers to explore them.” The law firm will not comment any more on the potential merger except to say, “senior leadership is working to assess the merits of this opportunity over the coming months and, if it moves forward, it will share more information.” Any merger will have to be accepted by a partner vote at both firms.

Greenberg recently added former New York City mayor Rudolph Giuliani to their 1,950-attorney strong firm giving them another big name partner. Should they merge with BLP, they would grow their number to 2,500 attorneys.

BLP was formed in 2001 through a merger with another British firm. They are considered a upper midmarket firm in the real estate area. They have been struggling a little in the past few years, seeing a change in managing partners in an attempt to turn things around. They have a referral relationship with Holland & Knight. They once had an alliance with Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel, but it broke apart nine years ago.
