Latham & Watkins Wins John H. Pickering Award for Pro Bono

Latham & Watkins Wins John H. Pickering Award for Pro Bono

Latham & Watkins was chosen to receive the 2012 Pickering award presented annually for pro bono work. The award is maintained and given by the Pro Bono Institute and the law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hand and Dorr LLP (WilmerHale). The award honors the memory of John H. Pickering, a founding partner of today's WilmerHale, and a leading appellate lawyer in his days, known for his commitment to pro bono and public interest law.

In 2011, more than 1,900 Latham attorneys and employees across 13 countries participated in the law firm's pro bono programs. Last year, Latham logged 173,000 hours of pro bono service and has provided more than 1.8 million hours of pro bono service over the last decade.

Esther F. Lardent, President and CEO of the Pro Bono Institute, said on the occasion, "Latham & Watkins is to be commended for both the critical pro bono work that it does domestically and abroad, but also for fostering a pro bono culture that is well integrated into the firm's goals and provides a diverse set of opportunities for its lawyers and staff."

Lardent also said, "Latham's work sends a very powerful message that pro bono is crucial to the maintenance and development of justice systems everywhere."

In receiving the award, Latham & Watkins Chairman and Managing Partner Robert M. Dell said, the law firm "is deeply honored by this recognition … Our firm's commitment to pro bono is best reflected in the dedication, compassion and diligence our lawyers bring to each of the hundreds of pro bono matters we take each year."

Known pro bono projects of Latham include representing Holocaust survivors secure reparations and pensions in Germany, making a thorough investigation of the US immigration court system, and working with organizations across the world to combat human trafficking and promoting civil liberties.
