Schwartz Woods & Miller Closes Its Doors

Schwartz, Woods & Miller, a Washington D.C. law firm, will be closing its door after the partner Malcolm Stevenson retired. The firm has helped numerous public broadcasters obtain their first FCC licenses.

Partners Steve Schaffer and Larry Miller will be joining with Garvey Schubert Barer across town. The firm has 10 attorneys advising clients on telecom, communications and media matters. They have around 200 public broadcasting companies as their clients with most being in the radio industry.

John Crigler at Garvey Schubert Barer said, “We’ve worked alongside and across the table from Larry and Steve over the years, and they are among the finest counselors in the radio and television industry. With nearly zero overlap in our client base, and with expertise in different areas of the law, this combination makes GSB stronger while offering more benefits to clients of both firms.”

Since Schwartz, Woods & Miller opened in 1970, the firm has served hundreds of clients as radio and television station licensees. This has included help with licensing, regulatory compliance and station sales and purchases in addition to distribution, copyright, program production, and trademark matters.

Stevenson joined in 1980, moving to partner in 1987. Miller joined the firm in 1973, becoming partner in 1979 and adding his name to the firm’s title. Schaffer joined in 1978 as an associate, becoming a partner in 1984. The firm’s founding partner Louis Schwartz died in 2004 and Robert Woods died in 2011.
