Dallas Gives Most Bang for Buck to Young Lawyers


A new survey from NALP shows that Dallas is the best deal when it comes to comparing the buying power of the salaries of young associates. New York City comes in at number 47 on the list.

The results of the survey, "Buying Power Index Class of 2011" show that 60 percent of the cities surveyed provide a better buying power experience than New York City. In Dallas, the median salary for new associates is $135,000, although only a salary of $70,350 is required to achieve the buying power of a New York City salary.

The top ten cities on the list are:
  1. Dallas, TX – Median salary is $135,000. Salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $70,350.
  2. Wilmington, DE - Median salary is $145,000. Salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $79,710.
  3. Houston, TX- Median salary is 115,000. Salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $65,670.
  4. Charlotte, NC- Median salary is 115,000. Salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $68,230.
  5. Los Angeles, CA - Median salary is 160,000. Salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $97,110.
  6. Boston, MA - Median salary is 160,000. Salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $100,400.
  7. Costa Mesa, CA - Median salary is 160,000. Salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $104,350.
  8. Washington, DC - Median salary is 160,000. Salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $104,790.
  9. Nashville, TN - Median salary is 100,000. Salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $65,960.
  10. Grand Rapids, MI - Median salary is 97,500. Salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $65,375.
Out of the 76 cities covered in the survey, Honolulu, HI comes in last where the median salary is $70,000 and the salary needed to achieve NYC buying power is $122,710.
